Arepas | Venezuelan Corn Cakes

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

* SPOKEN WORD added 11.22.21 *

February 2015, I was preparing for the arrival of My Hot Hispanic via a direct Southwest flight from Orlando, Florida. With my Valentine's Day grocery list in hand, I was searching the city of Columbus for prepared arepas!

In the international aisle at Kroger on Hospital Drive in Dublin I thankfully bumped into management. Come to find out this particular manager also worked part-time at his best friend's Venezuelan restaurant making fresh arepas by hand regularly...jackpot!

With a cart filled of roses, heather (flowers), wine, chocolates etc. this manager wasted no time inquiring about my Valentine's Day festivities! Normally, I'm pretty quiet and reserved and not much into small talk with strangers. In this moment in time, I did the unexpected and engaged in a "stop and chat" telling this manager all about My Hot Hispanic! What can I say, I did like this manager's energy and did feel like he was about to hook me up!

My expressions captivated his attention and he responded most intriguingly..."I refuse to tell you where you can purchase prepared arepas. They're easy to make Maggie (yes we exchanged names in our "stop and chat") and I want to help you impress your man!"

If my memory serves me correctly My Hot Hispanic had never made fresh arepas prior to our Valentines (staycation for me and vacation for him) and impressed he was!

With the right individual, cooking together and feeding each other can be a very sensual and meditative like experience. Refer to previous blog post, Sex as a form of Meditation for a deeper understanding on this topic!

I later acquired Personal Chef clients, a Venezuelan family, who requested fresh made arepas weekly and impressed they were to learn I regularly made arepas for myself and those I loved!

Personal Chef turned Blogger! One of my all-time favorite recipes is now yours!

May the kitchen become the art room where you create edible masterpieces that literally become you and those you choose to serve!

Lets Get Cooking!

(Step 1) Visit the flour aisle at your local grocery to purchase cornmeal. My favorite is P.A.N., which I purchase regularly from the Athens, Ohio Kroger Grocery.

(Step 2) Add a liberal amount of coconut oil to skillet and set temperature to medium heat.

(Step 3) In a mixing bowl combine equal parts cornmeal with equal parts filtered water.

(Step 4) Form corn cakes to your desired size, place in pre-warmed skillet and secure lid for an estimated 5 minutes.

(Step 5) Flip! and cook for another 5 minutes with secured lid!

(Step 6) Remove finished arepas from skillet!

Enjoy the view of my beautiful stack!

My favorite ways to enjoy freshly made arepas...

(1) with a drizzle of honey!

(2) a smear of hot pepper jelly!

(3) Sriracha and honey!

(4) an Organic fried egg with a pinch of black pepper!

(5) avocado and honey!

Sriracha would be a nice addition too though not pictured below!

(6) used as an alternative to bread and burger buns!

In my opinion, all of the above examples are even more delicious when consumed out of your lover's fingertips! Shop together, cook together, eat together, feed each other and read Sex as a form of Meditation together!
