New Year's Resolution(s)

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

* SPOKEN WORD *

If we're lucky, we start strong in January with high hopes and dreams for the New Year. If we're unlucky, we fall into the 80% of the population whom abandon their plans by mid February. Where do you see yourself in one month from now? Killing it or jumping ship? Often the problem is not the goal itself, but how we plan to achieve it.

I hope without a shadow of a doubt you see yourself extremely successful in the coming months and year in review! You can surely stack the deck in your favor. There's an art to setting goals as they need to be S.M.A.R.T. - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely!

S - Specific goals are far more attainable than general goals. Consider who, what, when, where, why, and which requirements and constraints exist to ensure you're specific with your New Year's Resolution(s)!

M - Criteria needs to be established to measure progress toward your goal(s). How will you know when your goal(s) has been achieved? Consider creating a checklist of tasks you plan to accomplish and mark them off as you progress.

A - Don't set yourself up for failure; be sure each goal is naturally attainable.

R - You must be willing and able to work toward your goal(s). Exactly how committed are you? Have you done something similar in the past? What do you really need to do to achieve your goal(s)? Be brutally honest with yourself about the amount of time and energy you have to give and plan accordingly.

T - Without a time frame, there's zero sense of urgency. Anchor your goal(s) with a deadline to set your mind, body, and soul into action. When you set a goal, you need to outline each step within your calendar to help keep you on track in meeting your deadline.

When you set effective goals, you increase your percent chance of achieving your desired outcomes. Goals provide structure and framework to direct your focus and productivity.

Additional thoughts to consider...

  1. If you're setting a goal, make certain you really want to achieve it. Confirm you're headed in the right direction. Ensure you're truly passionate about the goal. It must align with your vision for your future.

  2. If you're setting more than one goal for the year, verify that they don't contradict each other. Guarantee that you're not spreading your energy too thin with setting too many goals. Far better to achieve one fabulous goal in the coming year than to set five and jump ship due to an overwhelming sensation.

  3. Use positive language with yourself. Work with what you desire and not with what you plan to leave behind. The more positive instructions you provide for yourself, the more positive your outcomes will be!

  4. Stretch for the stars but never lose sight of realism. There's a delicate balance with goals. To inspire and motivate there must be a degree of challenge. On the flip side, If a goal is too easy, you will find it easy to lose focus.

  5. A detail-oriented nature pays off here. The more information you provide for yourself, the more accurate your results.

  6. Write down your goals; physically take pen to paper or type electronically if you prefer. Writing and typing out your thoughts makes your ideas more concrete and helps to set your goals into action. Wherever you choose to express yourself, make sure your goals are in plain sight to best keep you on track in achieving what you desire.

  7. Some individuals need additional and ongoing support to hold themselves accountable and ensure success. Does this sound like you? If so, you can line up the needed support throughout your year with the help of a professional coach for an example. If your goals are health related, maybe I can be of additional assistance! Sometimes, just simply sharing your plans with friends and family can be plenty to hold yourself accountable and thus I'm sharing my resolution with you! I'm only setting one this year as it's a big boy by my standards!

My 2021 Resolution: Complete my advanced studies yoga teacher training program by December 31st, 2021!

S - I registered for my #1 program on December 28th, 2020 with this resolution in mind! Constraints do exist, as I need the courses I've registered for to move forward as scheduled. If a teacher needs to reschedule for any reason it does jeopardize my chances of completing this resolution in a timely manor. I've built my coursework to be heavy in the earlier part of 2021 to allow time and space for teachers to reschedule if need be. This thoughtfulness increases my chances of success rather than evenly distributing the workload over the entire year.

M - I will measure my progress by completing required reading, education/training hours paired with active participation, in addition to exams at the conclusion of each course. My checklist has been created in my calendar to keep me on track with this resolution! I will know when this resolution has been achieved by a certificate of completion from the Registered Yoga School in addition to Yoga Alliance upgrading my registration to reflect completion of advanced eduction.

A - Five years is the time allowance provided to complete my advanced training. Six years is permitted with additional paperwork on my end. I'm surely challenging myself with a desire to finish in one year!

R - I'm willing and able and very committed! Time is what I need to complete this goal. Time to read, time to participate in multiple courses, time to study, and time to pass examinations. I've completed a yoga teacher training in the past so I'm familiar with the process and requirements.

T - Deadline set for December 31st, 2021! All the time needed is outlined in my calendar. I will use my calendar to stay on track.

  1. I really, really, really want to achieve this resolution! I'm headed in the right direction! I've registered for my courses! Reading materials are present! My first course is Anatomy and it starts on January 29th, 2021! I'm so very passionate and this resolution is 100% inline with my vision for my future!

  2. One fabulous goal and no more!

  3. I'm positively looking forward to each step in completing this resolution rather than feeling overwhelmed by attempting to complete something that could naturally be spread over six years!

  4. I'm surely reaching for the stars on this one! This will be a challenge and in no way, shape, or form is this resolution easy.

  5. My task list is very detailed within my calendar!

  6. My resolution is written here; plain as day for all to read and for all to hold me accountable, if you desire!

  7. Every teacher needs a teacher! Every coach needs a coach! I'm lucky and blessed to have both in addition to the unconditional love and support from dear friends and family!

Cheers to the high hopes and dreams of being within the 20% of our earthly population whom set and follow through on their New Year's Resolution(s)! Becoming a better human as a result of such amazing efforts!
