Vow of Silence

* SPOKEN WORD *

I recently completed my very first scheduled vow of silence! I went 30 hours without talking, well almost! I accidentally said a few words to myself and to my best friend but that's still pretty impressive! It's surely the longest I've ever gone intentionally without talking. I'm a fairly quiet person, an introvert, who desire and requires a lot of alone time. I've surely gone days without talking but they just happened and were definitely not planned. They were also under a different type of energy; one that would be described as dark and depressing. When experiencing extreme states of sadness I have a history of going mute. This time around, this vow of silence in August 2020, I was elated and it felt lovely to be so quiet under such a different light.

Have you ever completed a vow of silence?

Do you have any interest in scheduling one in the near future?

It's very therapeutic for the entire being not just for the vocal cords! It's recommended as a form of meditation and surely has enlightenment properties.

My vow of silence was special and created just for me! I'm very attached to particular sounds that I was not willing to give up:

-Stretching noises, especially when waking

-Mmm, sounds made with the mouth when food for example is so delicious

-Laughter, I will never hold back these expressions!

-Life saving noises, such as, when you clear your throat or blow your nose!

-Full disclosure, I didn't have sex during my vow of silence but if I do in the future sexy noises are allowed by my standards!

Upon completion and reflection, I did miss verbal expressions with my best friend. Overall our time together can be very quiet naturally but I missed wishing him a good morning and night, inquiring about his day and rest. Not that he needs to be reminded of my love but I missed expressing the way I feel for him. Aside from this my vow of silence was easy peasy.

I enjoyed the experience so very much that I've decided to schedule a vow of silence regularly on Mondays with one additional exception, calls from my best friend are welcomed and allowed! Typically we FaceTime and can be found brushing our teeth together, enjoying an asana (yoga flow), making a meal and eating together, and/or watching a show, such as, Avatar The Last Airbender! (Side Bar: great show on Netflix if you haven't carved out the time to watch yet!) All activities previously mentioned don't really require much talking at all! Today as I type to you on this given Thursday at 11:59pm I've spoke to my best friend for literally one minute this morning at 6am! So I feel this exception will still lead to a significant amount of silence, probably 23 hours as a guesstimation!

I truly hope you join me in scheduling at least one vow of silence for yourself in the near future as a form of meditation practice!

-If you're crafting a vow of silence just for you, what would it look like?

-What noises are you going to permit? Feel free to borrow my framework until you create your own!

Peace, Love, & Everlasting Protection!

Namaste!

Shh silence is golden!
