Traveling like a Minimalist

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

* SPOKEN WORD added 10.26.21 *

I am writing to you in an American Eagle Aircraft, CRJ900, 25,000 feet above ground level at 5:46am EST somewhere between Columbus, Ohio and Charlotte, North Carolina!

In preparation for my departure I gathered my definition of essentials for a five day extended weekend getaway. My adventures will span Savannah, Georgia and Ocala, Florida and everywhere in between!

With a desire to present myself as a true minimalist I only use a carry-on bag. I get to avoid the wait on arrival at the baggage claim terminal. I also avoid the state of disappointment and depression should my luggage not arrive to my destination. This unfortunate situation has happened in my maximalist days when my travel bag(s) could never fit stowed underneath the seat or in the overhead compartment.

My essentials…

Reviewing essentials right to left…

-My favorite short sleeved button up shirt

-Decaffeinated citrus cinnamon tea and caffeinated green white tea blend

-Four days worth of my Prenatal Multi Gummies taken daily to improve the health of my hair and nails, Vitamin C, Probiotics and Mushroom immune Defense supplements

-My bathing suit top, shorts and cover-up tank top

-Three jumpers made by Buddha Pants. I have my travel outfit shown in a picture above, which I will wear on my travel days being today, Thursday and again on Monday. I shower each evening and get comfortable in a clean jumper. I sleep in a clean bed and wake each morning feeling clean, refreshed, dressed and ready to start my morning shuffle! Three jumpers is the perfect number to outfit my adventure days being Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I will be staying with my Grandma in Ocala, Florida and will have the luxury of washing my travel outfit so I can feel clean on my Monday trip home! Access to laundry facilities is one of the many benefits to staying with friends, family or at an Airbnb when traveling!

-Two hair ties

-Shaver, tweezers and hair comb

-Tripod for my Online Yoga & Meditation video recordings

-Deck of playing cards

-Computer charger

-Microphone again for my recordings

-Toothpaste

-Four bobby pins

-Dr. Bronner’s hand and body wash

-Toothbrush and floss

-Cell phone speed charger and cord

-Book and morning yoga sequence

-Lastly, Raw Coconut Oil for a face and body moisturizer. If I was sexually active and needed lubrication this would also double as that.

Last minute, I added two items to my backpack: an organic cucumber as I sleep with slices on my eyes each night to decrease the swelling and dark circles plus a pair of sunglasses!

My carry on bag weighed 12.6 pounds and everything I desired fit with room to spare. I carried my computer because I knew I would be using it at every chance but it does fit nicely in the front pocket next to my book.

Honestly, if I had to, I could have eliminated the following...

-My favorite short sleeved button up shirt

-Two hair ties

-Shaver as I shaved prior to departure

-Deck of playing cards

-Three bobby pins

-Lastly, my crystal deodorant as I like the way I smell naturally. In general, I like crystals and I find it fun to wear crystals in the form of deodorant! Side note, this deodorant was a gift from my father. He made a two pack purchase and gave one to me. I found it interesting to learn that my dad had been using this deodorant for several years and I was excited to try his brand for the first time!

You might have noticed I did not pack underwear. I did not leave this out for privacy reasons. On October 19th in 2017, I started my journey of minimalism, for the second time and I recruited Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus electronically as my support system. They are more commonly know as The Minimalists! They jokingly say that true minimalists don't wear underwear. When I heard their joke for the first time via podcast, I had already initiated an underwear free way of life and felt one step ahead of my new minimalist lifestyle! I simply put on a fresh clean jumper each evening and wonder why I ever thought underwear was required!

*Do you overpack for your road trips, work trips and adventures?!

*Do you find you return home with the vast majority of the contents in your luggage unused?!

*Could you benefit from letting go and enjoying a lighter load when you travel?!

*Need help being more minimalistic by nature?! I love The Minimalists, maybe they could help you too!

*Did this expression add value to your life? Please consider donating to support in buying a symbolic cup of coffee! Thank you in advance for your contribution & generosity!
